Well-known Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Toyin Abraham, faced backlash after a man called her out for promoting her new films in Yoruba rather than her native language.

Toyin Abraham, originally from Edo State but raised in Ibadan, Oyo State, shared news about her latest movie, Malaika, and her upcoming film, Iyalode, on her X account. She announced this in Yoruba to celebrate Yoruba Day, which led to conversations on the platform.

She wrote, “IYALODE nbo ninu osu kefa, oojo kefa odun ti awa ninu e yi. Mo ni kin tun ranyin leti ni o Aese Modupe Malaika si wa Lori circuits.tv lowo lowo bayi, ejo eba mi wo, mi o nise mi o yato si ere ori itage.” Translating into English, She wrote, “IYALODE is coming in the sixth month, on the sixth day of this year. I just wanted to remind you all. Also, thank you so much! Malaika is currently available on Circuits.tv. Please check it out for me. Acting is my only job; I do nothing else besides stage performance

In a short time, Oriretan Honour expressed that it was unwise for Toyin Abraham to embrace Yoruba culture instead of her Edo heritage.

He further pointed out that she promotes Yoruba culture while ignoring her Edo background, even though both her parents are from Edo State. He stated that marrying a Yoruba man does not mean she should abandon her roots.

He gave her a deadline of 48 hours to exit “Yorubawood” and start supporting “EdoWood,” encouraging her to think wisely.

He wrote, “Toyin, it’s unwise claiming Yoruba that u’re originally not instead of Edo. More unwise only promoting Yoruba culture leaving Edo’s.Ur mum &dad are Edos but sad nobody knows this abt u.Marrying Yoruba isnt enough reason.U’ve 48hrs to dump Yorubawood &start promoting EdoWood.Bé wise.”

Toyin Abraham replied to him in Yoruba, saying that Oriretan Honour is very unfortunate, but she also prayed for God to give them peace.

She wrote, “Ori e ti buru bi eegun ti nle weere, amo Adura mi ni wipe ki Eledumare fun e alaafia.” Translating into English, “Your head is as bad as a masquerade chasing a mad person, but my prayer is that God grants you peace.”
