Man drowns retrieving phone inside Ogun well
A 31-year-old man, Sunday Jimoh, drowned inside a well while attempting to retrieve a phone in the Oja-Odan area of Ogun State on Saturday.
PUNCH Metro learnt from the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, on Sunday that the incident happened at about 10 am.
The PPRO noted that one Kabiru Aladeshayi reported to the police division in the area that he saw Jimoh while attempting to enter the well to retrieve the phone which had accidentally fallen into the well.
Aladeshayi was said to have warned the victim but he failed to yield to the warning and proceeded to enter the well.
Odutola said, “The Ogun State Police Command regrets to report a tragic incident that occurred in Oja-Odan on February 22, 2025, at about 10:00 hours, leading to the unfortunate death of Sunday Jimoh, 31, a resident of Laditan Area, Oja-Odan.
“The incident was reported by Kabiru Aladeshayi, a resident of Junction Area, Oja-Odan, who stated that he witnessed the deceased attempting to enter a well beside his shop.
“Jimoh reportedly insisted on retrieving a phone that had accidentally fallen into the well, despite warnings against the dangerous act. Regrettably, while Aladeshayi was away, Jimoh entered the well and drowned.”
The PPRO noted that police officers visited the scene of the incidents and recovered the body of the deceased which was handed over to the family upon request.
“Upon receiving the report, detectives swiftly responded to the scene, and rescue experts were contacted to recover the body. A preliminary investigation found no signs of violence, confirming that the incident was an unfortunate accident.
“The family of the deceased has been notified, and they requested to bury the remains under Muslim rites.
“The Ogun State Police Command expresses its deep condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and urges the public to exercise caution when dealing with such hazardous situations,” Odutola concluded.
PUNCH Metro reported on Saturday that the command said that it has launched an investigation and search operation following the tragic drowning of 19-year-old Oluwaferanmi Olasupo, at an abandoned quarry pool near Eseke Village, Odeda.
Odutola said Olasupo, believed to be an inexperienced swimmer, had gone to the quarry site with friends to swim when he drowned.
His grandfather, Olaseinde Sunday, was said to have reported the incident to the police at about 6:39 pm on Friday after being informed by villagers.
