Northern Media Group NORP Elects Kano Journalist Abbas Yushau as Treasurer

The Northern-based media group, Northern Online Media Reporters and Publishers (NORP), on Saturday elected its national executive members during an election held at Arewa House in Kaduna.

The election was supervised by the union’s Electoral Committee.

Comrade Musa Mohammed from Kaduna State emerged as the new National Executive President after a fiercely contested election. He secured 287 votes, defeating his rival, Comrade Lynn Adda, the former NUJ chairman of Taraba State, who received 138 votes.

Comrade Femi Adi from Kogi State was elected as the Executive National Secretary with 210 votes, narrowly defeating Comrade Rayyan Al-Hassan, who garnered 207 votes.

In line with the union’s constitution, the positions of Deputy National Secretary and National Assistant Secretary are reserved for the candidates who place second in their respective elections. As a result, Comrade Lynn Adda and Comrade Rayyan Al-Hassan were appointed as Deputy National Secretary and National Assistant Secretary, respectively.

Other unopposed winners include Comrade Zaharaddeen Ishaq Zailani as National Financial Secretary, Comrade Abraham Suleman as Assistant National Financial Secretary, and Comrade Abbas Yushau Yusuf as National Treasurer.

In his acceptance speech, Comrade Musa Mohammed called on members from the 19 northern states to utilize social media platforms to combat fake news and promote good governance.

He emphasized that social media platforms can only be reliable sources of information when used professionally by trained journalists.

“Our greatest challenge is the rise of citizen journalists, where anyone can post content online without verifying its source or authenticity. The positive side, however, is that professional journalists are increasingly taking charge,” he stated.

Musa Mohammed also urged members to adhere to the ethics of journalism, expressing his commitment to fostering unity and progress within the union throughout his three-year term.

He thanked the members who participated in the election and wished them safe travels back to their respective destinations.
