Obasanjo Warns: Without Reading, Nigeria May Produce Incompetent Leaders

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised concerns over the declining reading culture among Nigerian youths, warning that the trend could result in the emergence of “uninformed” and “incompetent” leaders in the future.

Speaking on Saturday at a dialogue organized by the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) in Abuja, Obasanjo emphasized the crucial role of reading in nation-building and preserving Nigeria’s literary heritage.

“Nigeria is blessed with good writers who have used their craft in nation-building, and one of the most distinguished authors is Chinua Achebe,” he said. “He exposed Nigeria to the world and used his writings to elevate Nigeria’s culture, particularly his own culture.”

The former president, who spoke on the theme The Writer’s Role in Nation-Building and Africa’s First Presidential Library, lamented that many young Nigerians are not taking advantage of the opportunities provided by the internet to enhance their reading habits.

“Reading is the pathway to becoming a writer, but many youths are not harnessing the opportunities provided by the internet,” he stated.

Obasanjo commended the Association of Nigerian Authors for its commitment to promoting literature and inspiring young writers.

Shehu Sani, a former senator, aligned with Obasanjo’s views, stressing that a poor reading culture could weaken the intellectual foundation of future generations.

Chukwudi Eze, chairman of ANA, reaffirmed the association’s dedication to engaging young scholars through mentorship programs.

“Having Obasanjo here is a motivation to the association, especially for young creative minds,” Eze said.
