Police Officer Commits Suicide in Niger

A police officer, identified as ASP Shafi’u Usman Bawa with AP/No 337979, took his own life on Saturday in Kontagora town, Niger State.

According to a police report, Bawa died by suicide after hanging himself from the ceiling.

The deceased’s father, Mr. Usman Bawa, a resident of the Rigasa area in Kontagora, reported the incident to the police authorities.

The officer’s lifeless body was taken to the General Hospital Kontagora, where a medical doctor confirmed his death. The corpse was later released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

The incident is currently under investigation, with further developments expected in due course.

A police wireless message regarding the incident states:

“Good afternoon, Sir.

I wish to report a suicide incident that occurred today, Saturday, February 8, 2025, at approximately 2:10 PM.  

Mr. Usman Bawa, a resident of the Rigasa area in Kontagora Mine, came to the squadron base and reported that his son, ASP Shafi’u Usman Bawa (AP/No 337979), had taken his own life by hanging himself from the ceiling.  

The lifeless body was taken to the General Hospital in Kontagora, where a medical doctor confirmed his death. The remains were then released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
