Sadiq Abacha: My Father’s Critics Were Full of Deceit

Sadiq Abacha, son of Nigeria’s former military ruler, General Sani Abacha, has described his late father as a victim of envy and betrayal.  

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Sadiq said history would be fair to Abacha despite ongoing criticism.

“The man Abacha—you have always been the one they envied with silent deceit. History shall remember you for being a better leader, no matter how much they try to put you down. As a son, I am most proud of you today. You indeed are the man they wish they were half of,” Sadiq wrote.

He ended his post with a Hausa proverb: “Duk wanda yayi jifa a kasuwa,” which translates to “whoever throws a stone in the market…”—a phrase often interpreted as a warning that actions have consequences.

His remarks follow the recent launch of former military President Ibrahim Babangida’s memoir, which has renewed discussions on the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. Babangida admitted that the election, won by MKO Abiola, was annulled under pressure from forces within his government, allegedly led by Abacha.

While Babangida expressed regret over the annulment, Sadiq’s comments present a different view of his father’s role in Nigeria’s history.

General Abacha ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998. His administration was marked by economic policies and security measures, but also allegations of human rights violations and corruption.
