S’South Tennis Club urges FG to prioritise inter-school sports
The President of the South-South Inter-Club Tennis Association, Sir Emem Akpabio, has called on the federal government to prioritise inter-school sports competitions to develop and encourage young talents in sport, especially tennis.
Addressing newsmen during the South-South Tennis Club Annual General Meeting and regional tennis tournament on Tuesday at Calabar Sports Club, Cross River State, Akpabio described sport as one of the contributing factors in the country’s economy.
“It is a platform to take out young people from the streets and mentor them to become great and quality people in the society. Sport is one of the contributing factors in a country’s economy. I will tell the government to go back to the basics. Go back to school sport and let us encourage sport and join hands to encourage tennis,” Akpabio said.
“When I was young, in my primary school in the then Cross River and Southern State, almost all the primary schools used to have tennis courts. Inter-school sport helps to take away children from the street and build society. For me, the government should get back to school and we will excel.
“Sport generally brings unity. You cannot get it right as the government in Nigeria if you don’t get back to the basics. If you look at the USA and most countries, sport plays an important role. We just decided to come together to promote the game. Get the younger ones to love the game. And today, I am proud to say that we are doing great and we should go back to the basics. Our focus is to catch them young and get the youths out of the street.”
The Vice President, Chijioke Amu-Nnadi added, “It is a platform to provide income for every youth which will attract the development of the local economy. Tennis is played by both young and old who love the game. It is self-funded and it is a medium to unite every citizen.”
