Political scientists have long argued that humans are inherently political beings. Whether or not we actively participate in politics, it undeniably shapes our lives in profound ways. Government policies, leadership decisions, and governance structures influence our daily experiences, often through intermediaries whose choices impact society.Ignoring politics is, therefore, a costly oversight.
For many Nigerians, political awareness is second nature. Growing up in Lagos but spending much of my childhood in Kwara State, I quickly realized that politics was deeply woven into the fabric of society.
In Kwara and across the North Central, Northeast, and Northwest regions, political consciousness is particularly high. Limited economic opportunities often leave people with two main pursuits: education or politics. While education is seen as a gamble, politics is often regarded as a more reliable path to influence and success.
As a young boy in Afon, Asa Local Government Area of Kwara, my interests revolved around politics, football, hunting, and, occasionally, school.
Higher education was a distant concept for many of us, as there were few graduates around to inspire or mentor the younger generation. Farming was another option, but for many, it was a necessity rather than a passion.
Tinubu’s Political Mastery
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stands out as one of Nigeria’s most strategic, consistent, and progressive political figures. Over the years, he has mentored and elevated numerous individuals in politics, guiding them from grassroots positions like councilors and local government chairmen to national offices, including governors, ministers, and even the vice presidency.
His influence was instrumental in the election of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a testament to his political foresight and strategic planning. Unlike many leaders who stifle the ambitions of their protégés, Tinubu nurtures political talents, allowing them to thrive—even beyond his own achievements. His primary concern has always been fostering progressive governance, rather than securing personal loyalty.
Former President Buhari once described Tinubu as a politically stable and ideologically steadfast leader. This was evident during the 2003 elections when he was the only southwest governor under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) who survived the political wave engineered by then-President Olusegun Obasanjo, which unseated most of his counterparts. His resilience and political acumen ensured his survival and subsequent dominance in Lagos and beyond.
Symbolism and Strategy in Tinubu’s Leadership
Beyond political strategies, Tinubu’s consistency is reflected even in his personal style. His signature cap, famously designed with “breaking the shackles” symbolism, has been a staple of his wardrobe for over three decades. This reflects his unwavering commitment to his beliefs and vision, a rare trait in Nigerian politics. His approach to political disagreements also showcases his unique leadership style.
During a reported rift with former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola over succession plans, Tinubu did not impose his preferred candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode, on him. Instead, he asked Fashola if he had someone in mind to continue his legacy. When Fashola indicated he did not, Tinubu’s candidate emerged as the natural choice.
A similar scenario played out with Ambode’s re-election bid. Rather than making it a personal issue, Tinubu directed him to seek the approval of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), a body he had long established to decentralize leadership decisions in Lagos politics. When the GAC rejected Ambode’s second-term bid, it was clear that governance in Lagos was not dictated by one man but by a structured and strategic political system.
This method of leadership mirrors the biblical wisdom of Jethro, who advised Moses to delegate responsibilities rather than burden himself with every issue. By structuring his leadership approach, Tinubu has created a sustainable system that ensures continuity and stability in governance.

Tinubu’s leadership style is characterized by liberalism, natural charisma, and genuine camaraderie. His mentees trust him because they recognize his willingness to make sacrifices for their growth and success. His strategic mind, coupled with a deep understanding of political dynamics, has made him an indispensable figure in Nigeria’s political space.
Love him or hate him, Tinubu cannot be ignored. His confidence, resilience, and ability to navigate Nigeria’s complex political terrain make him a formidable force.As a leader, mentor, and strategist, he remains an uncommon political juggernaut.
