President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced leadership changes in several federal universities, including the University of Abuja—now renamed Yakubu Gowon University—where he has dissolved the governing council and removed Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as Vice-Chancellor.
The announcement, contained in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, stated that the restructuring aims to “strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.”
To replace Maikudi, President Tinubu appointed Professor Lar Patricia Manko as Acting Vice-Chancellor for a six-month term. However, she “will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice-Chancellor position when it becomes available,” the statement clarified.
Additionally, Senator Lanre Tejuoso has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, replacing the previous governing council. His former position at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, will now be occupied by Senator Joy Emordi, previously the Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.
The presidency stated that these changes are part of efforts to address leadership issues in the country’s universities.
Similar changes were also made at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and other institutions.
All appointments and reassignments take effect immediately.
