Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, has become a hot topic on social media due to a video showing his release from prison in 1998.

The clip features a slim General Obasanjo and has sparked conversations, especially among today’s youth, known as “Gen-Z,” who are seeing this moment for the first time.

Former Nigerian leader Olusegun Obasanjo was let out of prison on June 15, 1998, following the death of General Sani Abacha on June 8, 1998. Obasanjo had been sentenced to prison in 1995 for an alleged coup against Abacha’s government. His release took place during the transitional government of General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who was instrumental in bringing democracy back to Nigeria in 1999.

Former president Obasanjo spent three years, three weeks, and three days in prison. He was freed on June 16, 1998, by General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who sent a Nigerian Air Force plane to Yola to bring him home.

In a video, a very thin Obasanjo expressed his thanks to the journalists for his release.

“It’s nice to be back at home; everybody knows that. I’m grateful to them; they have always done me proud. This is not the first time; I hope this will not be the last time,” General Obasanjo told newsmen.

Olusegun Obasanjo took office as Nigeria’s civilian president on May 29, 1999, after winning the presidential election under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He was re-elected in 2003 and remained in office until May 29, 2007.

Before becoming a civilian president, Obasanjo had ruled Nigeria as a military leader from 1976 to 1979, making him the first person in Nigeria to hold both positions.

In September 2024, 87-year-old former president Olusegun Obasanjo trends online as he demonstrates that age doesn’t matter by showing off his strong knees while dancing with newlyweds.

But rather you destroyed the country the more. Look at where we are today. All because of you people’s failure and selfish interests.
