12 Inmates Escape from Kogi Prison

The Kogi State Government has confirmed that 12 inmates escaped from the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe during an early morning jailbreak. 

Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, announced the incident in a statement on Monday in Lokoja. He revealed that the inmates allegedly fled through the prison towers, raising concerns about possible security lapses.

Describing the jailbreak as “unfortunate,” Fanwo assured the public that the government, in collaboration with security agencies, is taking immediate steps to prevent a recurrence.

He further disclosed that one of the escapees had already been re-arrested, while questioning the explanation of how the inmates managed to escape.

“The claim that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns. A thorough investigation is necessary to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, apprehend the fleeing inmates, and uncover potential internal sabotage,” Fanwo stated.

He added that Governor Usman Ododo has directed security agencies to tighten measures to prevent future security breaches.

“We urge the public to report any suspicious individuals in their communities. Anyone found harboring an escaped inmate will face the full weight of the law,” he warned.

Fanwo, however, reassured residents that there is no cause for panic. “Citizens should go about their daily activities with confidence, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority,” he added.
