Barge operation critical to cargo evacuation – Shippers Council

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council says barge operation is critical to cargo evacuation at the nation’s seaports.

The Director of Inland Transport Services, Mr. Mustapha Zubairu, stated this on Monday in Lagos during a meeting with members of the Barge Operators Association of Nigeria.

Zubairu noted that the utilisation of barges is key in the operations of the Lekki Deep Port and, “as the Ports Economic Regulator, the NSC wants to ensure a seamless evacuation of cargoes at the ports.”

He also disclosed that the Port of Antwerp has expressed readiness to assist members of BOAN and have access to foreign financial institutions for their operations.

Zubairu also hinted at a possible tripartite meeting with other agencies in a bid to proffer solutions and discuss issues of barge operations.

He promises a continuous collaboration with barge operators.

Earlier, the President of BOAN, Bunmi Olumekun, said the association proposed tariff harmonisation to create a more balanced and export-friendly environment that promotes national economic growth.

Olumekun emphasises capacity development for operators and captains to enhance productivity and promote industry growth.

The BOAN president reiterated the importance of legislation for the movement of heavy goods through waterways and the danger of carrying them by roads.

Olumekun also said that the association is collaborating with the Ministry of Marine & Blue Economy to ensure the establishment of more terminals and waterfront jetties.
