Customs, EFCC partner against wildlife trafficking

The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has partnered with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to combat wildlife trafficking.

The agreement was reached over the weekend when the Oyo/Osun Command Controller, Comptroller Joseph Adelaja, paid a courtesy visit to the EFCC’s zonal office in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdulmalik Akintola, quoted Adelaja as emphasising the threats that smuggling and financial crimes pose to economic stability, underscoring the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies.

He acknowledged the EFCC’s pivotal role in fighting economic and financial crimes, money laundering, and illicit trade and pledged to enhance cooperation through intelligence sharing, operational coordination, and capacity-building initiatives.

“There is a need for concerted efforts to combat illegal wildlife trafficking, a growing concern with economic and environmental implications,” Adelaja stated.

In response, EFCC’s Zonal Director, Hauwa Ringim, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening inter-agency cooperation, particularly in intelligence sharing and joint operations to curb cross-border crimes.

“We express our readiness to collaborate with the NCS in addressing financial crimes and illegal trade activities that could hinder the nation’s economic progress,” Ringim said.
