Edo travellers killing disheartening, violation of right to life – NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students has strongly condemned the killing of travellers in Esan North-East Local Government Area, Edo State.

In a statement by its National President, Oladoja Olushola, NANS described the attack as “disheartening, highly condemnable, and a violation of the right to life.”

The victims, who were travelling in a truck and claimed to be hunters on Thursday, were found in possession of 19 locally made firearms.

However, the vigilantes, sceptical of their claim, labelled them as kidnappers.

The attack, carried out by a local vigilante group resulted in the brutal killing of the travellers accused of being criminals.

NANS emphasised that it is not the role of informal security groups or community members to take the law into their own hands.

The association called for a full investigation and prosecution of those responsible.

Olushola said, “The actions of the Edo State Security Corps and local vigilantes were swift, brutal, and unlawful. Vigilantes should support formal security agencies, not act like rogue elements.

“At a time when security agencies are working hard to reduce crime, this reckless killing undermines their efforts.”

NANS also praised the state government for its quick response, including visiting the affected community and initiating discussions to prevent further violence.

“This proactive approach is a step in the right direction,” the statement said.

The association urged the Federal Government and security agencies to take action against those responsible. It also called on students and youths in the affected areas to remain peaceful.

“Violence will never bring positive results. All stakeholders must work together to ensure justice and prevent future occurrences of such tragic events,” Olushola stated.
