El-Rufai’s Political Strategy is Pure Self-Interest – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed Nasir el-Rufai’s call for opposition leaders to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP), calling it “an invitation to drink from a chalice poisoned by selfishness, vengefulness, and delusion of grandeur.”
El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State (2015–2023), resigned from the APC on March 10 and joined the SDP after months of consultations with opposition figures. In recent months, he has been openly critical of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the ruling party.
Reacting to el-Rufai’s move, Felix Morka, APC’s national publicity secretary, said Nigerians are aware of the former governor’s motivations.
“Nigerians are far more savvy than El-Rufai thinks, and they know that he is driven by raw self-interest rather than a genuine concern for the country,” Morka said in a statement on Monday.
He dismissed el-Rufai’s criticisms of the Tinubu administration as a “grudge-laden tirade,” insisting that the APC remains unshaken and continues to attract new members nationwide.
According to Morka, these new members are joining to “identify with the party’s values and support President Tinubu’s policies.”
He described el-Rufai’s claim that Tinubu has failed as “outrageous, bogus, and a gross distortion of reality.”
“Across all sectors, Nigerians are witnessing tangible progress in the delivery of the President’s campaign promises. Nigeria is better off today than when he took office,” he said.
Morka said Nigerians have no doubts about Tinubu’s commitment to economic reform, good governance, and improving citizens’ welfare.
He challenged el-Rufai to engage in constructive criticism or offer alternative policies “as expected of serious-minded political opposition, rather than engaging in scurrilous propaganda and deliberate misinformation.”
Calling el-Rufai’s attacks on the president “reprehensible” and aimed at undermining national progress, Morka said the former governor should focus on his new political journey.
“El-Rufai is free to choose his political affiliation as he has done. He should quit sulking, get a grip, and salvage some respectability,” Morka added.
