Enugu partners FG to relocate correctional centre

The Enugu State Government has lauded the Federal Government for approving the relocation of the Enugu Correctional Centre from the Government Reserved Area to a more suitable location, affirming its readiness to collaborate in ensuring the project is realised promptly.

The governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, gave this assurance when he received members of the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions at the Government House, Enugu, on Wednesday.

Addressing the delegation, led by Committee Chairman Chinedu Ogah, Mbah reiterated the state’s long-standing call for the relocation of the correctional facility, which was established in 1915, from the heart of the city.

“It is highly commendable that the Federal Government has sanctioned the relocation of the Enugu Correctional Centre.

 “This is something we have consistently advocated for. I believe you have a true partner in the state government, as our objectives align perfectly. We are eagerly awaiting guidance on how we can collaborate to make this happen,” Mbah said.

The governor disclosed that the state government had already conducted a survey for the proposed new site.

“We have completed a survey of the new location, which we are more than happy to share with you. We will also take you to the site so you can see it for yourselves,” he stated.

Mbah also emphasised the need to automate the justice system to decongest correctional facilities, noting that his administration had already taken significant steps in this direction.

“On our part, we will not relent in our efforts to reform the justice system. We have fully automated our court processes to ensure the speedy dispensation of justice.

“We recognise that a large number of inmates in correctional centres are awaiting trial. By ensuring faster justice delivery, we can significantly ease congestion in these facilities,” he stated.

He further highlighted the state’s commitment to digitising court proceedings. “This is why I refer to it as full automation. Even the traditional longhand transcription is no longer required in our courts, as we now have verbatim reporters. This reform process started a year ago, and we are pleased that it is now reaching its conclusion,” he added.

Ogah commended Governor Mbah for enhancing security in Enugu State, noting that residents and travellers could now move freely at any time of the day without fear.

“People can now drive through Enugu State at any hour without concerns for their safety,” Ogah said.

He also lauded the state government’s investment in security technology, alongside the efforts of correctional officers and security agencies, which he said had prevented jailbreaks in Enugu State.

Praising the governor’s development initiatives, Ogah stated, “The strides taken by this administration are creating jobs, boosting economic development, and reducing crime.”

The Committee welcomed the governor’s proactive approach to relocating the correctional centre and acknowledged the state’s provision of the proposed new site.

Additionally, it sought the government’s support in procuring vehicles for transporting inmates to and from trial sessions.
