Family seeks N5m for four-year-old with heart disease

The family of a four-year-old boy, Nelson Emale, who was diagnosed with congenital heart defect, known as Tetralogy of Fallot, has called on Nigerians for financial assistance.

According to a letter from a Consultant Paediatrician and Paediatric Cardiologist at the Samara Heart Foundation, Dr. Angela Odike, seen by PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, Emale’s condition was diagnosed at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo State.

The condition was described as a complex heart problem involving four anatomical abnormalities.

However, due to financial constraints, Emale’s parents were unable to afford the necessary follow-up treatment.

According to Emale’s parents in a letter sent to PUNCHMetro, he has been experiencing endless crying and difficulty breathing, known as “tet spells,” due to low blood flow to his lungs.

These signs were said to have returned a month ago.

PUNCH Metro findings revealed that when taken to the hospital, Emale was discharged due to a lack of funds for his treatment.

The parents stated in the letter that he urgently requires surgery at a cardiac centre in Nigeria to “repair TOF and improve blood supply to his lungs.”

They added that the cost for the necessary investigations and surgery was estimated at N5m while appealing to the public for assistance to save their son.
