Finidi anticipates Remo’s slip

Rivers United coach Finidi George is anticipating a slip-up from leaders Remo Stars as the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League approaches the business end, The PUNCH reports.

The former champions are 11 points adrift of Remo in the league table, but Finidi beleives its a gap they can reduce or even overtake with 11 games to go.

Rivers United and Remo Stars were in a neck-and-neck race earlier this season, but they surrendered the top spot and drifted further after a poor run of form at the start of the second stanza of the league.

They seem to have retraced their steps in the last five matches, with just one defeat sandwiched between two wins and two draws on the road.

Bouyed by their latest result against 3SC in Ibadan where they forced the Oluyole Warriors to a goalless draw, Finidi believes 11 games is enough to overthrow Remo Stars.

“We will fight. In this league, anything can happen. We had a bad run in two or three games, which held us back. But we will fight till the end. Nothing is easy at this point. Nobody knows what is going to happen,” Finidi said.

The ex-international and former Super Eagles handler believes the leaders can still suffer some setbacks too.

“We see Remo up there, but they might lose a game and that might affect them. That was what happened to us. We lost a game and we started struggling, but I think we are getting back into our form, which is good for us toward the end of the league.

“Remo are doing so well, but a lot can happen in 11 games. So, we will be focused on each game as it comes. We are not looking at Remo.

The gaffer beleives their chase can begin at home against Niger Tornadoes on Sunday, after getting another point on the road in Ibadan.

“Having one point is not bad. We will see how we can go back home and consolidate and pick the maximum three points.”

Finidi, who led Enyimba to their ninth NPFL title in 2023, joined Rivers United at the start of the campaign after a short spell as the head coach of the Super Eagles.
