Fubara Suspension: Kwankwaso’s Understanding of Law is Flawed – Minister Ata

Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, has criticized the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, over his remarks on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.  

In a statement signed by his media aide, Seyi Olorunsola, Ata accused Kwankwaso of failing to grasp the legal basis for the President’s action, insisting that the decision was made in the interest of national stability and internal security.

“The proclamation was a necessary step to maintain law and order in Rivers State, which has been embroiled in prolonged political turmoil,” the minister stated.

Commending the National Assembly for swiftly approving the President’s decision, Ata emphasized that both chambers acted responsibly by evaluating security briefings and taking measures to prevent further escalation of the crisis.

“The current legislature is composed of astute minds capable of conducting timely and diligent reviews of security matters—unlike Kwankwaso, who remained largely inactive throughout his four years in the Senate,” Ata said.

The minister further described Kwankwaso as someone with a flawed understanding of law and governance, urging him to focus on resolving the ongoing crisis in the Kano Emirate Council, which he alleged had been worsened by the political actions of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, a Kwankwaso protégé.

“For the record, President Tinubu acted within the confines of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which grants him the authority to enforce emergency measures while ensuring proper legislative oversight. Any state facing prolonged instability should take heed and address its internal issues,” Ata asserted.
