Gowon: NYSC Was Rejected by Students in 1973

Former Head of State and founder of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), General Yakubu Gowon, has revealed that Nigerian students strongly opposed the scheme when it was first introduced. 

Speaking at his residence in Asokoro, Abuja, during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, Gowon reflected on the resistance the scheme faced at its inception.

He noted that despite the opposition, the NYSC has become a platform for fostering national unity and exposing young Nigerians to different cultures and communities.

Congratulating Brigadier General Nafiu on his appointment, Gowon encouraged him to build on the existing structure of the scheme.

In response, Nafiu acknowledged the impact of the NYSC, describing it as a program that has influenced many Nigerians. He expressed appreciation for Gowon’s continued involvement and sought his guidance.

The NYSC was established in 1973 by the Gowon administration as part of efforts to promote national reconciliation after the 30-month civil war.
