IGP Warns Police Officers Against Unlawful Detentions

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a strong warning to officers of the Nigeria Police Force against unlawful and prolonged detentions, emphasizing the importance of respecting human rights and the rule of law.  

In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP reminded police personnel that pre-trial detention must adhere strictly to the legally stipulated periods as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

He stressed that unlawful detentions not only violate Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution, which guarantee personal liberty and dignity, but also erode public trust in the police force.

“Adherence to legally stipulated detention periods is not only a legal obligation but also a fundamental aspect of upholding the dignity and rights of individuals,” the IGP stated.

He cautioned against any practice that could lead to prolonged detentions, warning that officers found violating these principles would face serious consequences.

Calling for greater accountability within the force, the IGP encouraged officers to “uphold the highest standards of conduct in their interactions with the public.”

He noted that by prioritizing human rights, the police would foster stronger relationships with communities and ensure that law enforcement is carried out with integrity and respect.

The statement further reassured Nigerians that the police leadership remains committed to ensuring that all individuals in custody are treated lawfully and with dignity.

“The commitment of the current Police leadership to human rights reflects a broader vision of a police force that is not only effective in maintaining law and order but also dedicated to protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals,” the statement added.
