IWD: Experts inspire Lagos girls, highlight diverse career paths
Female students in Lagos State have been urged to be purpose-driven to achieve excellence in their chosen pursuits.
These insights were shared by experts during a mentorship programme organised by a Non-Governmental Organisation, The Executive Woman, in celebration of International Women’s Day, under the theme “AccelerateAction.”
The event took place at Lagos City Model College, Sabo, Yaba, on Wednesday.
The panelists and experts from diverse sectors encouraged the students to broaden their horizons, expand their knowledge, reject limitations, prioritise education, build relationships, and be assertive.
They emphasised the importance of being humble, yet not timid, and advised the students to work hard, be bold, and develop skills for financial independence.
Over 100 girls from public schools across Lagos State participated in the programme, which featured mentorship and various activities, including a dance competition.
Female professionals excelling in different fields were invited to share their experiences, inspiring the students to unlock their full potential, particularly in their academic journeys.
To highlight the theme of this year’s celebration, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” the panelists shared real-life experiences and addressed questions from the students.
The founder of The Executive Woman, Ibukunoluwa Osoba, explained that the initiative aimed to bridge the gap in society, where many female students lack the resources to see the possibilities around them.
This need inspired the choice of a public school setting for the celebration of International Women’s Day.
She said, “We decided to bring together women who are already doing well in the corporate world to show the girls that they too can succeed. Not everyone comes from a privileged background, but many of us have built ourselves up to a point where we can make a meaningful contribution to society.”
Osoba continued, “After this, we have a mentorship programme for the girls, to help them choose a university, access necessary resources, and we’re open to partnerships with those who want to support this cause.”
She also emphasised the importance of providing internships for the girls, saying, “We aim to offer internships—free, with expenses covered—for the girls to gain exposure to professionals and understand how they manage their daily routines, even if it’s just for a week.”
One of the panelists and Head of Legal at Leaders in Maritime and Onshore Security Services, Judith Ebogu, urged the girls to embrace challenges, saying, “There are different challenges at different stages in life. The real mindset to have is not to run away from challenges but to face them head-on and learn from them. Build resilience, and believe in yourself. Know who you are, and know your strengths and weaknesses. That’s how growth comes, especially as a woman.”
Another panelist, Dorcas Thorpe, who is the Head of Strategy and Transformation at LAPO Microfinance Bank, also shared her insights, stating, “Challenges are pathways to success, so be focused and keep pushing. Trust that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
“Expand your knowledge, build relationships, and aim for financial independence.”
The girls participated in a lively dance competition to add excitement to the event, with winners receiving gifts and cash prizes.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme calls for action to unlock equal rights, power, and opportunities for all, especially advocating for a future where no one is left behind.
