JUST IN: House of Reps okays Tinubu’s emergency rule in Rivers

The House of Representatives has officially approved the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu imposed emergency rule in response to the ongoing crisis in the state.

As part of the measure, Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly were suspended for six months, with a sole administrator appointed to oversee governance during this period.

However, as required by the Constitution, the emergency rule needed the approval of two-thirds of the National Assembly to take effect.

During Thursday’s plenary session, Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen called for a voice vote, with the majority voting in favor. He later confirmed that 243 members were in attendance, based on the day’s register.

Earlier, Rep. Ali Isa JC moved a motion to amend the duration of the emergency rule, seeking a reduction from six months.

The motion was seconded by Rep. Miriam Onuoh.
