Kano gov hails journalists’ contributions to democracy as NUJ clocks 70

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has lauded the Nigerian Union of Journalists for its commitment to democracy, press freedom, and nation-building.

This is as the union marks its 70th anniversary.

In a statement released on Sunday, Yusuf commended the NUJ’s leadership, led by  Alhassan Abdullahi, for championing ethical journalism and advocating for journalists’ welfare.

The statement was signed by Director-General, Media and Publicity, Kano Government House, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa.

“The NUJ has played a pivotal role in shaping our nation’s narrative, promoting democracy, and ensuring accountability in governance.

“The Kano State Government recognises the critical role of the media in our democracy and remains committed to supporting and collaborating with the NUJ to uphold a free and independent press,” Yusuf stated.

The governor acknowledged the media’s crucial role in holding leaders accountable and fostering public discourse, stressing that his administration remains committed to providing a conducive environment for journalists to operate without fear or intimidation.

As the NUJ celebrates this landmark anniversary, Yusuf urged journalists to uphold professionalism, integrity, and objectivity in their reportage, emphasizing that their work remains central to deepening democracy in Nigeria.

“Once again, congratulations to the NUJ on this remarkable achievement. May the next 70 years bring even greater success and accomplishments for the union and its members,” he added.
