Kano Governor Appoints BBC Award-Winning Journalist as Chief Press Secretary
Mustapha Muhammad has been appointed as the Chief Press Secretary and Deputy Official Spokesperson to the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.
In a statement signed by Sanusi Bature, the Director General of Media and Publicity at Kano Government House, Mustapha, a journalist with nearly two decades of experience in international media, has been recognized for his professionalism and commitment to transparent communication.
Born on December 26, 1974, in Alfindiki Quarters, Kano, Mustapha Muhammad developed an early interest in media. He attended Tudun Madatai Special Primary School, where he was promoted from Primary Four to Primary Six due to his outstanding academic performance.
He later studied at Rumfa College before earning a degree in Mass Communication from Bayero University, Kano (BUK), in 2000. He subsequently obtained a Master’s degree in Development Studies in 2010 and an MSc in Mass Communication in 2018, both from BUK. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Mass Communication at the same institution.
His career includes work with international media outlets such as the BBC, Radio France Internationale, Inter Press Service (IPS), and Bloomberg News. His investigative and human-interest reports have been featured on France 24, Press TV, and Farin Wata Digital Satellite.
In 2014, he won the BBC Documentary Bursary Award for Nigeria’s Working Children, which aired in both English and Hausa. In 2006, he broke the news of the arrest of former Liberian President Charles Taylor in Nigeria, securing an exclusive report for the BBC.
His work in print journalism includes publications in Bloomberg News, Inter Press Service, ThisDay, and Daily Trust. His notable investigative reports include Lake Communities Left High and Dry, Nigeria Polio: Making Up for Lost Time, and Nigeria’s Hijab Wearers Face Scrutiny on Female Bombers. In recognition of his work, he received the Best Documentary Maker Award from Crystals International in 2015.
Beyond journalism, he has worked in media consultancy and training. As the Managing Director of Quick Action Media Services Nigeria Ltd., he has provided media services for organizations such as the World Bank, the Federal Government, state governments, and NGOs.
As Chief Press Secretary, he is expected to use his expertise in communication, media relations, and public affairs management to enhance government engagement with the public.
