Kano Primary School Teachers Decry Unexplained Salary Deductions
Primary school teachers in Kano State have raised alarm over unexplained deductions from their February salaries, with some losing as much as ₦33,000.
The affected teachers expressed frustration, stating that they were neither informed nor given any official explanation from the state government regarding the deductions.
The teachers said they received no prior notification or clarification on why parts of their salaries were withheld.
Musa Ibrahim, a teacher at a public school in Dala Local Government Area, voiced his disappointment over the situation. “I was shocked when I checked my salary and saw that ₦18,000 was deducted without any reason. We work hard despite the economic challenges, yet we are not treated fairly,” he lamented.
Similarly, a local chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Malam Usman Abdullahi, revealed that ₦33,000 was deducted from his salary. “As a union leader, I am also affected. This is unacceptable. We demand an explanation from the government because this has created hardship for many teachers,” he stated.
Aisha Muhammad, a teacher from Ungogo Local Government, also condemned the deductions. “I lost ₦15,000 from my salary. This is unfair, especially when the cost of goods and services is skyrocketing. We are already struggling, and now this,” she said.
The teachers called on the state government to address the issue and ensure their full salaries are restored. “We are not against legitimate deductions, but transparency is key. No one has told us why our money was taken,” said Malam Umar Aliyu, another affected teacher from Kumbotso Local Government.
Efforts to reach Malam Yusuf Kabir, Chairman of the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), for comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
Meanwhile, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has inaugurated an investigative committee to probe cases of salary underpayment and non-payment affecting civil servants in the state.
The governor issued the directive in a statement released by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Thursday.
Describing the deductions as a violation of workers’ rights, he vowed to expose and punish those responsible. “This administration will not tolerate any act of injustice against our workers. Anyone found complicit in this reprehensible act will face the full wrath of the law,” he declared.
Following the committee’s inauguration, Governor Yusuf suspended the acting Head of Service and Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Salisu Mustapha, over alleged salary deductions and non-payment of salaries.
To ensure administrative continuity, the governor appointed Umar Jalo, the Permanent Secretary of REPA, as the new acting Head of Service, pending the outcome of the ongoing probe.
