Lagos Unveils Africa’s First AI-Themed Feature Film, Makemation

The Lagos State government has announced the release of Makemation, Africa’s first feature film centered on artificial intelligence (AI) and technology.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a statement on Sunday, revealed that the groundbreaking film will hit cinemas across Nigeria starting Easter Weekend, April 18, 2025.

“Makemation is Africa’s first feature film that spotlights the fast-rising impact of its youth, especially girls, showcasing how they leverage artificial intelligence and technological innovations to tackle some of the continent’s most pressing challenges,” the statement read.

The coming-of-age drama follows the inspiring journey of a young girl from a low-income community in Lagos. Faced with numerous obstacles, she remains brilliant, determined, and unstoppable.

The film blends entertainment with a universal message of hope, demonstrating how innovation can be a catalyst for change—transforming poverty from an enduring issue into a challenge of the past.

Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to fostering creativity and innovation in Lagos, emphasizing the importance of supporting the creative industry.

“We have consistently prioritized the growth of our creative industry and believe that fostering creativity and innovation is crucial for our state’s development.

“By supporting initiatives like this, we aim to promote our talented filmmakers and artists while showcasing technology’s immense potential in storytelling.

“Together, we are building a vibrant creative ecosystem that entertains, drives economic growth, and positions Lagos as a leading hub for the arts in Africa,” he wrote on his X handle.
