Natasha’s Supporters Clash with Police at National Assembly Gate

Supporters of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan clashed with police officers at the National Assembly gate on Wednesday morning as security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.  

The protesters, who gathered as early as 8 a.m., rallied in support of Akpoti-Uduaghan ahead of her scheduled appearance before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions at 2 p.m.

Tensions escalated when police blocked their access to the assembly complex, deploying tear gas canisters to break up the gathering. The crowd later moved to the Unity Fountain, a known protest site in Abuja.

The protest follows a confrontation between Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Their February 20 dispute over Senate seating arrangements led to her referral to the disciplinary panel.

Akpoti-Uduaghan has since filed a N100 billion defamation lawsuit against Akpabio, accusing him of damaging her reputation. She also alleged last week that Akpabio targeted her after she rejected his advances.

The Senate has not yet issued an official response to the protest or the allegations. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s appearance before the ethics committee later today is expected to draw further scrutiny.
