Nigeria Engages Foreign Military Experts for Counterterrorism Training – Defence Minister

The Federal Government has enlisted elite foreign military experts to train Nigerian soldiers in special operations, focusing on counterterrorism and hostage rescue.  

The Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, announced this during the launch of a training program for 800 soldiers in Kaduna State.

He emphasized that, beyond training, the government is committed to equipping troops with modern technology and advanced weaponry to enhance their effectiveness in combating security threats.

According to Abubakar, the first phase of the program will train 800 soldiers, with an additional 800 to follow. He explained that engaging foreign experts was necessary to counter the evolving tactics of terrorist groups.

While he did not disclose the specific countries providing the military experts, he confirmed that they were drawn from seven different nations.

“In the initial phase alone, 1,600 Nigerian soldiers will undergo specialized training before the program transitions into its next stage,” the minister stated.

Abubakar further emphasized that the government’s security initiatives are already yielding positive results in certain areas, citing Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State as an example where peace has been restored.
