Nnamdi Kanu Apologizes For Outburst Against Court, Prosecutor As New Lead Counsel Kanu Agabi Steps In
A former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Kanu Agabi (SAN), has been engaged to lead the defence team of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Kanu is facing terrorism charges brought against him by the federal government.
Agabi, a seasoned legal practitioner known for his persuasive approach in criminal cases, will lead the defence alongside Aloy Ejimakor, who has been representing Kanu in previous proceedings. The decision to bring Agabi on board was reportedly made to strengthen the defence strategy.
Notably, Agabi had previously led the defence of former Senate President Bukola Saraki when the federal government prosecuted him over alleged false declaration of assets.
As of the time of this report, the federal government’s legal team, headed by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), has arrived at the Federal High Court, accompanied by a team of other legal practitioners. Meanwhile, Kanu is in court for his fresh arraignment on terrorism charges.
In another development, Nnamdi Kanu has formally apologized to Justice Binta Nyako and lead prosecutor, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), over his conduct at the last hearing. Kanu’s apology was conveyed through a heartfelt speech read on his behalf by his new lead counsel, Kanu Agabi.
During the emotionally charged address, Agabi acknowledged that Kanu had reasons to be aggrieved but admitted that he had overstepped in his previous remarks against the court and legal representatives.
“In expressing his anger, he attacked the Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako, the prosecutor, and even his own lawyers. However, he deeply regrets his actions,” Agabi stated.
“I hereby apologize to Justice Binta Nyako. She did not deserve the unjust attack. I also apologize to Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), who deserves the highest respect but was unfairly castigated. I appeal for forgiveness. Kanu is a good man, though imperfect, and is advocating for his people’s cause.”
Agabi further emphasized the need for peaceful dialogue in resolving differences, urging all parties to embrace reconciliation.
In response, Awomolo (SAN) acknowledged the apology and expressed his willingness to move forward without resentment. “I was moved by the plea and have forgiven Kanu for all he said against me,” he said. Awomolo also clarified that he is not a persecutor but a prosecutor, committed to ensuring a fair and timely resolution of the case.
