No Tolerance for Poor Construction – Housing Minister Declares

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to high-quality construction under the Renewed Hope Projects, warning that contracts for substandard work will be revoked.  

Dangiwa issued this warning while inspecting the ongoing construction of 1,500 and 500 housing units in Kano, built through Public-Private Partnership and budgetary provisions, respectively.

He urged developers to adhere strictly to contractual terms to ensure durability and quality.

“We will not tolerate any substandard work found on any Renewed Hope Project site anywhere in the country. We are very committed to ensuring that the houses we build and the infrastructure is of good quality,” he stated.

Reiterating the ministry’s tough stance, he added, “We will not tolerate poor quality work from any developer or contractor. We will first demolish the structure, and the contractor will have to rebuild as per standard, or we revoke the contract entirely.”

Dangiwa also emphasized the importance of timely completion, urging developers to finish projects within two to three months to ensure Nigerians get value for their money. “The government will not compromise on standard,” he asserted.

Beyond infrastructure, the Minister highlighted the economic benefits of housing construction, noting its role in job creation for masons, laborers, artisans, food vendors, block makers, and suppliers of building materials.

“The chain effect of construction work is significant in creating a positive environment,” he explained.

He further outlined the government’s broader housing agenda, revealing that construction is underway for 2,000 units in Kano, 3,112 units in the FCT, and 2,000 units in Lagos, with more locations to follow soon. “Our plan is to build seven Renewed Hope Cities, one in each geopolitical zone and the FCT,” he added.

To maintain high standards, the Minister directed Federal Controllers and assigned ministry monitoring personnel to closely supervise projects and report any quality violations for immediate action. He also warned them against compromising their responsibilities.
