Nurses Association Petitions Kano Govt Over Nursing College Provost’s Tenure
The Association of Kanawa Nurses in Diaspora (AKID) has petitioned the Kano State Government, demanding the immediate removal of Hajiya Bara’atu Gwadabe as Provost of the College of Nursing Sciences, Kano, over her alleged refusal to retire despite reaching the mandatory retirement age.
In a letter addressed to the Secretary to the State Government and other relevant authorities, AKID raised concerns that Gwadabe remained in office beyond her official retirement date of March 1, 2025.
According to the petition, she was born in November 1967 and began her career on March 1, 1990, meaning she has completed the mandatory 35 years of service. However, despite this, she has allegedly refused to step down, creating disruptions in the institution’s academic and administrative activities.
The petition also questions Gwadabe’s eligibility for the position, stating that she does not meet the qualifications required under the Kano State College of Nursing Sciences Bill, 2024.
The law stipulates that a provost must be a senior lecturer, a registered nurse or midwife with at least a master’s degree in nursing, and have a minimum of 15 years of post-registration experience as a nursing or midwifery tutor. AKID argues that Gwadabe falls short of these criteria, making her appointment unlawful.
Additionally, the association criticized the absence of a Governing Council at the college, which it claims is a violation of the Kano State College of Nursing Sciences Act.
In light of these issues, AKID urged the Kano State Government to declare the provost’s continued stay in office unlawful, ensure that she immediately vacates her position, and establish a duly constituted Governing Council to oversee the college’s affairs.
“This petition is in the best interest of the college and its stakeholders. We anticipate your usual cooperation and look forward to prompt and decisive action,” stated Nurse Aliyu Tukur Ahmad, Chairman of AKID Finland Unit Branch, in the petition submitted on March 25, 2025.
When contacted for a response, Gwadabe stated that she was unaware of the allegations until now. However, since she does not have authorization to comment on the matter, she said she would refer it to her superiors.
