Okwuchukwu marks NWSL debut with landmark goal

Nigeria forward Chiamaka Okwuchukwu marked her National Women’s Soccer League debut with a landmark goal, finding the net just 1 minute and 48 seconds after coming on as a substitute for San Diego Wave against Orlando Pride.

The 21-year-old’s remarkable introduction to American football etched her name in the league’s record books, registering the second-fastest goal by a player in their regular-season debut in NWSL history. Only Ebony Salmon’s 55-second strike in 2021 stands ahead of the Nigerian’s achievement.

Okwuchukwu, who joined San Diego Wave from Nigeria Women’s Premier League side Rivers Angels in 2024, demonstrated why she has been regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest attacking talents. Her sharp movement and clinical finishing were immediately on display as she made an instant impact for her new club.

“Her signing is the latest example of our intention to add promising young players to the roster,” San Diego Wave’s Sporting Director, Camille Ashton, had remarked when the Nigerian first signed.

“With her skillset, we believe Chiamaka will complement our current attacking players very well and be a key contributor to the team.”

The young striker first caught international attention during the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, where she impressed with two goals and one assist in four matches. Her performances helped inspire the Falconets to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Her exploits on the international stage did not go unnoticed, as she was subsequently named a finalist for the CAF Women’s Young Player of the Year 2024 award, further cementing her reputation as one of the continent’s most promising talents.

Okwuchukwu’s transfer to San Diego Wave last year involved a one-year deal pending medical examination, International Transfer Certificate, and P1 Visa approval. The club confirmed that she would occupy an international slot on their 2025 roster.

The Nigerian forward’s rapid adaptation to the American league highlights her potential as a key offensive asset for San Diego. With her goal-scoring prowess already on display, Okwuchukwu is set to be a major influence as the Wave chase success in the 2024 NWSL season.
