S’Africans query Broos over team selection

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has come under scrutiny from their fans after the former Cameroon head coach suggested resting some of Bafana’s players against the Benin Republic on Tuesday.

Midfielder Teboho Mokoena has been a key player for Bafana Bafana across all competitions. However, coach Broos hinted he might rest him on Tuesday in Group C’s World Cup qualifier against Benin.

A section of South Africans feel the Masandawana star has not been delivering as expected while others claim it is a massive risk for Hugo Broos.

“I don’t blame him, Benin is not our main competitor for the automatic qualification spot, so he can rest some players,” one of the fans Sinqobile Dlamini wrote.

“Don’t give Mokoena rest but give him the captain’s armband. This one is a soldier,” Kagisho Siphiwe Balepile also said.

Meanwhile, some Mamelodi Sundowns fans are also asking the coach to rest some of their players.

“Rest all Mamelodi Sundowns players against Benin because we have a Cup game on Friday against Sekhukhune United, please coach,” one of them, Luvo Takatayo said.

Some however feel the game against the Benin Republic is important to  kill Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying.

“This is a very important game for Bafana Bafana and we need to win this game against Benin on Tuesday. This is a must-win game for Bafana Bafana so that Nigeria’s dreams of the World Cup are completely destroyed. There is no need to rest important players like Teboho Mokoena, Relebohile Mofokeng, Ronwen Williams, Jayden Adams, Elias Mokwana and Khuliso Mudau,” another fan Asekho Masiza said.

Amid the fans division, Broos was also reminded that his job was at risk if he failed to lead them to the World Cup.

“His job is at risk if South Africa doesn’t qualify, everyone must understand. South Africa is only leading with a few points with many games to go,” Brian Madembo said.
