Senate Urges Review of Rising Data Costs, Calls for Affordable Internet Access

The Nigerian Senate has called on the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to engage with telecommunications providers to review the recent surge in data costs, ensuring fair and affordable pricing for all Nigerians.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (APC-Cross River) during plenary on Wednesday. Titled “Urgent Need to Address the Increased Cost of Data Services in Nigeria,” the motion highlighted the financial burden the price hike has placed on millions of Nigerians, particularly young people who depend on internet services for their livelihoods.

Senator Ekpenyong noted that telecom providers had increased data costs by as much as 200%, making it difficult for many to access digital services. He emphasized that young Nigerians rely on the internet for freelance work, digital marketing, social media management, and other income-generating activities. However, the high cost of fiber-optic internet leaves most dependent on mobile telecommunications companies, making the sudden price hike a threat to their economic survival.

“The sharp increase in data prices not only limits access to essential digital services but also puts a strain on young entrepreneurs and remote workers,” he said.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks, stressed that addressing the issue would support small businesses, ensuring they remain competitive while also sustaining the profitability of telecom operators.

As part of its resolutions, the Senate urged the ministry to develop a policy framework that guarantees affordable internet services nationwide. Additionally, it called for the federal government to establish and support tech hubs across the country, offering free or subsidized internet access to young entrepreneurs, students, and innovators.

The upper chamber further mandated its Committee on Communications to investigate the factors driving high data costs and propose solutions for a sustainable, business-friendly telecommunications sector.
