Stop Illegal NIN Card Printing, NIMC Warns Businesses, Cyber Cafes
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a stern warning to cyber cafes and organizations against the unauthorized printing of National Identification Number (NIN) cards.
In a statement on Monday, Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, emphasized that only the commission is authorized to issue the official General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC), warning that any other form of printed NIN card is illegal and violates the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007.
“The National Identity Management Commission has noticed some unscrupulous individuals, cyber cafes, and organizations’ indiscriminate printing of unauthorized ‘NIN cards’ and charging unsuspecting members of the public exorbitant fees,” the statement read.
Adegoke further clarified that “The commission has not authorized anyone or organization to print any card in place of the NIMC General Multi-Purpose Card. This act is against the NIMC Act No. 23, 2007.”
NIMC cautioned the public against patronizing unauthorized printers, urging individuals and organizations to refrain from using any unapproved NIN cards as a means of identification.
“The so-called NIN card is not authorized by NIMC, and on no account should anyone present it as a means of identification,” the commission stated.
To curb the fraudulent practice, NIMC revealed that security agencies have been alerted and instructed to arrest those engaging in the illegal activity. The commission warned that anyone caught violating the law would face serious legal consequences.
Additionally, NIMC reaffirmed that the NIN slip remains the only legal and verifiable document for identification and must be used for accessing services.
To address public concerns, the commission disclosed that plans have been finalized to launch an improved General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC).
This multifunctional card will serve both as a physical means of identification and a payment solution, powered by AfriGo, a local payment platform.
