Tinubu Renames Kano University After Maitama Sule

President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Education in Kano to Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education in honor of the late statesman and diplomat, Yusuf Maitama Sule. 

Sule, born in 1929 and passing in 2017, made significant contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political development throughout his distinguished career. He served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, where he chaired the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid.

His other notable roles included serving as Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives (1954–1959), leading Nigeria’s Delegation to the Conference of Independent States (1960), serving as the First Federal Commissioner of Public Complaints (1976), and holding the position of Minister of Mines and Power.

In a statement on Monday, Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said President Tinubu believes that immortalizing Sule’s legacy will inspire younger generations to uphold values such as integrity, patriotism, character, and nationalism.

The statement, titled President Tinubu Approves Renaming of Federal University of Education Kano to Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, highlighted that the institution, originally established by the Kano State Government, is now one of seven specialized universities of education under the Federal Government.

“As a federal university of education, it will continue to play a pivotal role in training teachers, further strengthening Nigeria’s education sector,” the statement added.
