US-based Nigerian scientist champions soil health research

A United States-based Nigerian scientist, Ayodeji Idowu, is at the forefront of revolutionising crop fertilisation and nutrient stewardship.
As an expert with a career spanning over a decade in soil health and nutrient management, Idowu is redefining how farmers and researchers approach sustainability, productivity, and environmental stewardship.
Idowu’s passion for healthy soil stemmed from a deep curiosity to uncover the intricate balance of soil ecosystems, optimising soil fertility while minimising environmental impacts that ensure the long-term viability of global agricultural farmlands.
From his early academic pursuits to his current role at the Department of Plant and Environmental Science, Clemson University, United States, as a thought leader in the field, Idowu has been instrumental in developing innovative nutrient management strategies for crop productivity.
His research has provided crucial insights into soil microbiomes, organic matter restoration, and precision agriculture techniques that enhance crop yields without depleting the soil’s natural resources.
In an interactive session, Idowu said crop productivity and agricultural sustainability involve the deployment of cutting-edge technology and deliberate acts of strategic soil health and nutrient stewardship.
Funded by a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture – Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education, Idowu pointed out that his research strategically aligns with the national initiatives of the United States Food and Drug Administration, Department of Agriculture, and Environmental Protection Agency on their proposed national strategies for reducing US food loss and waste by 2030.
Recognising the exigency for sustainable farming solutions, Idowu said he has spearheaded initiatives that bridge the gap between scientific research and practical application, collaborating with other scientists, farmers, policymakers, and agribusiness leaders to implement soil conservation practices that reduce reliance on chemical inputs while maintaining high agricultural productivity.
The scientist’s work in precision nutrient management has led to the development of data-driven models that help farmers tailor fertilisation strategies to specific crop needs, reducing waste and improving soil health.
By integrating advanced technologies such as geographic information system remote sensing, AI-driven soil analysis, and regenerative farming techniques, Idowu highlighted that he is setting a new standard for nutrient use efficiency in modern agriculture.
According to him, his work aimed to address the unresolved complexity that surrounds the nutritional requirement and nutrient allocation of agricultural crops, both annual and perennial crops alike.
