1,000 pupils for Lagos International Day for Sports – Commission
The Lagos State Sports Commission has announced that over 1,000 students from selected primary and secondary schools across the state will participate in a three-day event to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Sports for Development and Peace.
According to the Commission, the activities will include a debate, a competition, and an award ceremony, scheduled to be held on May 7, 8, and 10, respectively.
In a statement shared on the official Facebook page of the state government on Sunday, the LSSC disclosed that the announcement was made during a media briefing held on Friday to unveil plans for the celebration.
The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to providing an enabling environment that encourages inclusive youth participation in sports, regardless of social status or background.
The International Day of Sports for Development and Peace, celebrated annually on April 6, was established by the United Nations General Assembly to underscore the power of sports as a driver of social development, inclusion, and peacebuilding.
Speaking at the press conference, the Director-General of the LSSC, Lekan Fatodu, emphasized the crucial role sports play in promoting youth empowerment and social inclusion.
“Sports serve as a unifying tool, bringing everyone on board and ensuring that no one is neglected,” the statement read, adding that “It challenges stereotypes, gives voices to the voiceless, and fosters gender equality.”
The commission reiterated that the Lagos State Government, through its sports initiatives, has consistently used athletics as a platform to uplift youth, combining education and sports to nurture future leaders and champions from local communities.
“The Lagos State Government, through the Sports Commission, has, over time, leveraged the power of sports in bringing youth into the limelight. It provides opportunities for talents to blend athletics with academics,” the statement noted.
The LSSC also highlighted its partnership with Carmel Academy as a testament to the impact of collaborative efforts involving the Ministry of Education, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, sports providers, and corporate sponsors in driving the goals of the IDSDP.
