Confusion surrounds Anambra LP primaries
There is growing confusion around the Labour Party’s governorship primaries in Anambra State, which were scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
This uncertainty followed a Supreme Court ruling on Friday that removed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the party.
The decision appears to have disrupted plans and caused disagreements within the party’s leadership in Anambra.
Some members of the state chapter told journalists on Friday that the primary has been put on hold. However, others say it will go on as planned.
Speaking to reporters in Awka on Friday, the Anambra State acting LP Chairman, Peter Okoye, confirmed that the primaries would no longer hold.
He said, “By virtue of the Supreme Court’s verdict this afternoon, any primary election conducted by any executive outside that led by Senator Nenadi Usman will not stand.
“The new helmsman and her team would take over the National Secretariat and other structures down the line nationwide immediately.
“We have already fixed a meeting of the acting Anambra State executive for Saturday to formulate a way forward so as to brief the national Secretariat immediately. We urge all our teeming members and supporters to remain steadfast and unshaken in their support.”
Okoye also called for calm and assured supporters that the situation would be resolved soon.
He praised the LP as one of the fastest-growing political parties in Nigeria, especially in Anambra, and encouraged members to remain alert and wait for further instructions.
“We urge every member/stakeholder to be ever vigilant and to await further directives,” he added.
A party chieftain, Gabriel Okam, told our correspondent that the primaries are still on track.
According to him, the Supreme Court’s ruling did not remove Abure as the party’s national leader.
“Ignore the insinuation that the Labour Party primaries have been suspended. Our primaries will still hold tomorrow; all the members of the National Working Committee and delegates are already in Anambra and the two aspirants are gearing up for the primaries tomorrow.
“By 12 midnight, the venue for the primaries will be made public for the people to know. Our primaries will hold tomorrow and proceedings will commence by 10am. Any information about the suspension of our primaries is fake. Nobody can stop the people from moving forward. Anambra State Governorship Primary Elections hold tomorrow in Akwa,” he stated.
Meanwhile, two aspirants—Chief George Moghalu and Sir John Nwosu—have already been screened for the primary.
This was confirmed by the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, in a statement issued last Saturday.
He noted that the party’s screening committee, led by George Ozodinobi, who is also the Deputy Minority Whip of the House of Representatives, had completed the screening process last Friday.
