Delta APC receives PDP defectors, vows to unseat Oborevwori
Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has declared that the All Progressives Congress will unseat Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in the 2027 general elections, asserting that the Delta State Governor is not welcome in the APC.
Nwoko made the remarks in Agbor, Ika Federal Constituency, on Saturday during the official defection of members of the Delta Unity Group, a socio-political organisation, from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC.
The event, which was attended by APC heavyweights including National Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, and former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, was seen as a major boost to the party’s political momentum in Delta State.
“Oborevwori wants to come to the APC, but tell him to stay where he is,” Nwoko said emphatically to a cheering crowd.
“He will be defeated. We don’t want him in the APC.”
Nwoko’s comments come amid persistent rumours about Oborevwori’s alleged plans to defect to the APC—speculations that have been consistently denied by the governor’s media aides.
According to Senator Nwoko, the governor’s perceived interest in joining the APC may be tied to President Bola Tinubu’s reported desire to secure Delta State for the ruling party in the 2027 elections.
“APC doesn’t need the governor’s membership to win Delta State,” he asserted. “Delta will surely become an APC state come 2027. Twenty-five years of corrupt governance by the PDP is enough. We must take over.”
He further encouraged party supporters to remain resolute, saying, “Don’t let anyone doubt who you are. The next governor will be formed by you. As you go home, tell them that the next governor of Delta State will be formed by the APC.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Omo-Agege said neither Governor Oborevwori nor his predecessor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, would be welcomed into the APC.
“The APC is open to welcoming new members from the PDP, but Oborevwori and Okowa are not welcome,” Omo-Agege stated.
He added that over 60% of PDP members in the state had defected to the APC since the 2023 general elections.
He expressed confidence that this trend would position the APC to win the presidency in Delta for President Tinubu and secure a clean sweep across Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly seats in 2027.
Both Nwoko and Omo-Agege also reiterated their support for the creation of Anioma State, accusing the PDP of deliberately stalling the initiative to retain political control of the current Delta State structure.
When contacted, the Delta State PDP Publicity Secretary, Sunday Apah, reiterated the party’s position that Governor Oborevwori had no plans to defect.
Apah said, “It was the APC lawmaker representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South and Udu Federal Constituency, Francis Waive, who, impressed by Governor Oborevwori’s development strides, proposed that the APC should adopt him as its governorship candidate for 2027.
“It’s not an issue of defection. If an APC lawmaker is saying this, it shows that Governor Oborevwori is widely accepted across Delta State,” Apah stated.
