Gunmen ambush, kill NSCDC officer in Bayelsa
Unidentified gunmen have ambushed and killed unnamed personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps at Igbomotoru community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Three others were injured in the attack on the patrol team of the security outfit which occurred on Friday, a source told Punch Metro on Sunday.
The source stated that the patrol team was returning from clampdown operations on some illegal bunkering sites in the area when the incident happened.
The Igbomotoru axis of the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area has become a known area for bunkering activities in recent times due to the number of oil facilities in the area.
Punch Metro gathered that the injured officers are currently receiving treatment in Yenagoa while the body of the dead officer has been deposited in a mortuary.
Just last week, suspected vandals blew up the Oando Plc-owned Ogboinbiri/Obiobi 24-inch gas pipeline between Angiama and Angiamagbene, also in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
The gas pipeline supplies gas to the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas facility in Bonny, Rivers State.
Sometime in 2024, some military personnel invaded the community in search of a militant kingpin who was accused of masterminding the killing of 17 soldiers at the Okuama community in Delta state.
When reached for comments on Sunday, the NSCDC spokesman in the Bayelsa State Command, Mr Solomon Ogbere, said he was yet to receive a comprehensive report on the incident.
He said: “The information, sincerely speaking, we’ve gotten it, but I’m still waiting for the OC to give me a comprehensive report. But, you are not far from the truth anyway.
“But, I can’t actually speak on it because I have not gotten the exact details but by tomorrow (Monday), I will be speaking on good authority by telling you that this is what actually transpired and this is the casualty rate and this is what happened.
“But something of such took place but I’ve not gotten the comprehensive report on it yet.”
