Insecurity: ‘We Inherited a Broken System’ — NSA Ribadu on Buhari’s Legacy

National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has described the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari as an “extremely bad government,” suggesting that President Bola Tinubu’s team is dealing with the heavy burden of a broken system.
Ribadu, who spoke during a stakeholders’ meeting on security at the Benue State Government House in Makurdi, acknowledged the country’s deep-rooted security challenges, but assured Nigerians that progress is being made.
“We’re addressing the issues. Causing harm is easy, but fixing a country takes time,” he said, pointing out that the current administration inherited a mess but is working hard to clean it up.
The NSA’s visit comes in the wake of rising violence and renewed attacks in Benue and other parts of the country. Ribadu sympathized with the people, promising that the federal government remains committed to restoring peace.
“We will overcome this. The whole country stands with you,” he told the gathering. “This is a difficult period for everyone, but we are fully with you.”
Highlighting Benue’s importance in the nation’s security map, Ribadu assured that more efforts would be channeled into stabilizing the region.
“Benue is a very important state. We must ensure peace is sustained here. Your Governor is doing a good job, and we will continue to support him,” he said.
While acknowledging the efforts of the armed forces, Ribadu also pointed out the realities on the ground.
“Our military is doing well, but we can’t have security personnel in every village. What we need is the people’s support—and to stop politicising these killings. That will go a long way in bringing back peace.”
Ribadu insisted that although the security situation remains delicate, it has improved compared to what the Tinubu administration met on the ground.
“We inherited a broken system, but things have changed. The violence has reduced. We’re not there yet, but we’re on the right path.”
