JAMB: No UTME Candidate to Write Exam Outside State of Registration

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has assured candidates that no one will write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) outside the state where they registered for the exam.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, explained that the board is fully prepared to ensure all candidates sit for their exams within their state of registration during the main UTME.

He clarified that while a few candidates wrote their mock exams in centers outside their states of registration—due to limited availability of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres at that time—this would not happen during the actual UTME.

“If the mock centres in Abuja were full and available space was only in Nasarawa, candidates had to be posted there,” Benjamin said. “But for the main examination, all approved CBT centres across states will be fully active, so no candidate will need to travel out of their state.”

He emphasized that early registration plays a key role in determining how close a candidate’s exam centre will be to their location. When centres close to a candidate are filled, they are then assigned to the next available one within the same state.

Benjamin also acknowledged the delays and technical hitches that occurred during the mock examination. He said JAMB regrets any inconvenience caused and assured candidates that these challenges were expected as part of testing new innovations.

“The mock exam helps us prepare better for the main UTME and allows candidates to get used to the CBT environment,” he noted.
