Kano deploys committee to probe Uromi killings

A special committee set up by Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to investigate the recent killings in Uromi, Edo State, has left Kano for Edo.

This was announced in a statement by Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, the Chief Press Secretary to the state deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo, in Kano.

The committee, led by Gwarzo, left on Thursday for a fact-finding and peace-building mission.

The group includes important figures such as the Emir of Rano, Ambassador Mohammad Isa Umar, Commissioners for Religious Affairs, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Special Duties, and Women Affairs, along with the Chairman of Bunkure Local Government Area, among other key officials.

The committee was formed in response to the national outrage over the violent attacks in Uromi, which led to multiple deaths and the displacement of many residents, including some people from Kano State.

Speaking at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport before leaving, Gwarzo emphasised that the committee’s goal is to bring justice, peace, and reconciliation.

“Our mandate is clear — to investigate, to consult, and to recommend sustainable solutions. This is not just a fact-finding mission, but a peace-building initiative aimed at restoring confidence and preventing further violence,” Gwarzo said.

The killings, which took place last month, have raised tensions in the affected community.

As part of its mission, the committee will meet with Edo state governor, Monday Okpebholo, security leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society groups during their week-long visit.
