LASG allays flooding fears at Adeniji, others

The Lagos State Government has assured residents that robust measures are underway to effectively manage flood incidents in the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known after an inspection of the Lagos Island urban regeneration project on Friday.

He said the comprehensive project would provide a lasting solution to the persistent flooding in areas like Adeniji, Oroyinyin, Idumagbo, Ojo Giwa, Jankara, Aroloya, and surrounding communities.

Wahab acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the ongoing construction but assured residents it was a necessary step toward long-term improvement.

“The ongoing urban regeneration work may be causing some discomfort, and we sincerely apologise. But we can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. The inconvenience is temporary, and what we’re delivering is a permanent fix to a longstanding challenge on Lagos Island,” he said.

He noted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside key officials from the Ministries of Environment, Water Resources, and Infrastructure, has visited various project sites and expressed satisfaction with the pace of work.

To mitigate the current impact of construction-related flooding, Wahab disclosed that a temporary pumping station had been set up at the Adeniji Adele Underbridge.

This facility is actively channeling stormwater away from areas such as Aroloya Street, Ojo-Giwa, Binuyo, and Oroyinyin, allowing construction to continue in unaffected sections.

He stated that the regeneration project would be delivered in phases, with full completion expected within two years.
