Nigerian crypto trailblazer asked to write entrepreneurship book

Nigerian-born tech entrepreneur Hanu Agbodje has disclosed being told to write a book on his entrepreneurial journey by British billionaire and Virgin Group co-founder, Sir Richard Branson.

According to Agbodje, the Briton made this charge when he recently hosted him on his private Necker Island, where the two engaged in deep conversations on entrepreneurship, resilience, and innovation.

The disclosure was made in a statement released Sunday, in which Hanu shared the inspiring details of his week-long experience with Branson.

Hanu said the most memorable moment came when Branson issued a personal challenge to him as he prepared to leave the island.

“He called me aside one more time: ‘Promise me you’ll get that book out.’” Hanu recalled, highlighting Branson’s request for him to write a book about his entrepreneurial journey.

Hanu’s admiration for Branson dates back to his childhood, when he read ‘Losing My Virginity’. One particular story, about Branson’s mother selling her necklace to fund his first business, struck a chord with Hanu so deeply that he asked his own mother to do the same. “She did,” he shared, reflecting on how this moment shaped his own path.

During their time together, Hanu and Branson bonded over spirited chess matches, scenic hikes, and profound conversations about the challenges of building businesses in difficult environments.

“We spoke not just about fame or success but about failure, grit, and staying true to the mission. Stories that aren’t in the books. Lessons that will stay with me for life,” Hanu recalled.

The pair also exchanged stories about the challenges of entrepreneurship. “We traded war stories about building things in hard places.

“He listened to mine: from selling candy at eight years old to launching Nigeria’s first crypto exchange at 21. He smiled and said, ‘You’ve got to write a book.’ And I promised I would.”

Their conversation also touched on Branson’s experience in Nigeria, where Virgin Atlantic had rapid growth before Branson eventually exited due to local challenges. Despite these challenges, Hanu noted that Branson “still holds a deep affection for Nigeria”.

The discussions also delved into the future of blockchain, crypto, and finance in emerging markets.

“Of course, we also talked about blockchain, crypto, and the future of finance in emerging markets, where opportunity and innovation collide,” Hanu shared.

The unforgettable encounter concluded with Hanu spending quality time with Branson’s family, including his wife, son, and grandchildren.

Hanu later reflected on the experience in a social media post, describing it as a powerful reminder that “great things are often born from great challenges”.

He added that it has reinforced his commitment to building Africa’s digital future through technology and innovation.

In response to Branson’s challenge to write a book about his entrepreneurial journey, Hanu remarked, “Let’s just say, when Sir Richard Branson asks you to write a book… you don’t say no.
