Ogun varsity matriculates 204, plans 18 new courses
The Vice-Chancellor of Aletheia University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, Prof Amos Onasanya, has urged the newly admitted students to prioritise academic excellence and shun all forms of vices, including cultism, drug abuse.
Onasanya warned that the University not only have stiff penalties for contravention of its rules but erring students could also be summarily expelled from the institution.
Onasanya stated this during the matriculation of 204 newly admitted students of the university for the 2024/2025 academic session.
“You are admonished as new students to shun all forms of social vices such as cultism, charm use, drug addiction, indecent dressing, examination malpractices, sexual misbehaviour, fraudulent acts and any anti-social behaviour that could mar your future,” he stated.
He told the students to recognise that matriculation marks the onset of their exposure to opportunities for success in life.
“With this matriculation ceremony, a new chapter of several opportunities, experiences and challenges awaits you. For you to succeed, you must be focused, committed to your studies, disciplined and be an active participant in this University community”.
“Work hard so that you can graduate in record time; shun bad company and be good ambassadors of the University, your respective families, your state and the nation.
“I urge you to obey school rules and regulations as the contravention of any of the rules will be met with stiff penalties and in some cases expulsion from the institution,” he said.
The VC said that though the university currently runs 17 academic programmes, preparation is already in top gear to receive the accreditation panel for 18 new courses, including Law, Nursing, Agriculture, Medical Laboratory Science, among others next month.
The Chancellor and Founder of the University, Major General Sansadeen Awosanya (retd.), also urged the students to stay focused and shun every form of distraction that could hinder them from excellent academic pursuit.
He disclosed that the university is populated by dedicated academic and non-academic staff who are all ready to help the students build a successful career outside the institution.
The retired soldier, therefore, pledged further commitment to the growth of the university, adding that with plans to add 18 more new academic programmes by May.
Delivering his keynote address on “University Education Beyond Paper Certificates: Aletheia University Model”, Prof Kehinde Thomas of the University of Ibadan urged students not only to struggle for good grades but also to possess other life-enhancing skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, solving the ability to navigate life complexities.
The Professor of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development noted while the certificate was something to leverage, they also needed soft skills, including critical thinking and problem-solving ability.
“If you have all of these, you will be able to survive anywhere in the world and that is the beauty of education. It is to make you leave the world far better than you met it, not only to just have certificates,” he added.
