Palm Sunday: CAN urges Nigerians to emulate Jesus’ humility

As Christians all over the world mark Palm Sunday, the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kwara State, Bishop Sunday Adewole, has called on leaders at all levels in the country to be humble in the discharge of their duties.

Adewole gave the charge while addressing Christians on the importance of Palm Sunday during a Palm Sunday procession in Ilorin, Kwara State capital on Sunday.

Thousands of Christians in Ilorin, the state capital, joined their counterparts across the world on Sunday to celebrate Palm Sunday, commemorating the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

Waving palm fronds and chanting “Hosanna,” worshippers from various denominations embarked on a grand procession that began from Saint Barnabas Cathedral, Sabo-Oke, at about 8:45 am.

The joyful march lasted over four hours, winding through major roads, including Muritala Way, Maraba, Ipata, Taiwo, and Unity Road, before returning to the cathedral for final prayers.

Another group of worshippers commenced their walk from First Baptist Church, Surulere, and merged with the larger crowd at Unity Junction, showcasing a powerful symbol of Christian unity and devotion.

During the celebration, the CAN chairman urged Christians to embody the virtues of humility and love, reflecting the example set by Jesus during His entry into Jerusalem.

According to him, Jesus Christ riding on a donkey signifies humbleness which all leaders should emulate.

“Jesus rode on a colt to teach us humility and service. As Christians and Nigerians, we must be humble, embrace peace and show love to our neighbours. This is the only way we can build a better society,” he said.

The State Vice Chairman of CAN, Pastor Ademola Popoola, reminded the faithful of Christ’s sacrifice for mankind’s salvation.

“Jesus gave His life to redeem us. We must live holy lives and draw nearer to God with humility,” he advised.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the Holy Week in Christianity, culminating in the celebration of Easter.

This year, the Palm Sunday procession by Christians in Ilorin was done peacefully as usual as Christian Faithfuls in their thousands moved from St Barnabas Sabo-Oke to Kulende, Amilengbe Opo Malu, Emirs Road, Taiwo Oke, Unity, Challenge, post office back to St Barnabas Church Sabo Oke.
