NEW ONITSHA ROAD

Rain washes away Onitsha road one week after inauguration

An alarm has been raised by residents of Onitsha, the commercial nerve center of Anambra State, over the washing away of one-week-old road by a 20-minute rian on Monday.

The rainfall lasting about 20 minutes reportedly washed away newly laid asphalts at Ochanja market in Onitsha South Local Government Area.

The road, constructed by the Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration lasted barely one week before it was washed away by the rian torrents.

A viral video, posted by one Onyebuchi Nwafor, showed a section of the road where the coated asphalts piled out with pieces scattered and water-logged on some parts of the road.

A voice on the video expressed grave concern over the poor and shoddy job the Soludo administration is executing, in spite ofย  paying billions of naira of taxpayers money for the projects.

The video was also accompanied by a post. It partly reads, โ€œWonders, they say, shall never end.

โ€œProf Chukwuma Soludoโ€™s one week old road washed away in a split second.

โ€œThe โ€˜Dubai-Taiwanโ€™ Ochanja market road in Onitsha constructed with billions of Anambra taxpayersโ€™ money has just been washed away by just one episode of 20-minute rainfall on Monday, 25th of March, 2024

โ€œThe rainfall exposed the nature of poor quality jobs executed by the government.

โ€œJust a few weeks ago, at the same Ochanja Market, a storey-building under construction by the same government collapsed, killing an unknown number of people.

โ€œBy the time the rainfall is fully established in June, more poorly executed construction by the Anambra State government would be laid bare for the blind to see.โ€

A Labour Part chieftain, and former governorship candidate in Anambra State, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, had earlier expressed worry over the quality of the roads being constructed by the Soludo administration.

Ozigbo had criticized some of the construction companies handling most of the road projects in the state, describing them as โ€˜Sokudo and Sonsโ€™ in apparentย  reference to their lack of expertise.

As at the time of filing this report, the state government was yet to react to the video.
